INDIANAPOLIS -- A man was shot and killed by a state trooper the southwest side of Indianapolis Friday morning.

The shooting happened around 11:30 in the 100 block of West Gimber Street.

A spokesperson for Indiana State Police says a search warrant was being served for a weapon involved in shots fired into a home in Brown County on May 7.

Officers broke in when no one answered the door.  They were then confronted by a man, identified as 59-year-old Terry Edwards of Indianapolis, armed with a long gun.

Authorities say the Edwards didn't drop his gun when asked to do so, and then raised it toward a state trooper.

The officer fired in self defense and shot the Edwards, according to state police.  Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was in the house and no officers were hurt.

The trooper who shot Edwards has been identified as Senior Trooper Josh Watson, a 12-year veteran. Watson has been placed on administrative duty while the investigation continues per standard protocol.
