INDIANAPOLIS – A man died and a woman was seriously injured following a single-vehicle crash on Indy’s east side Monday afternoon.

Indiana State Police said the accident happened on the southbound ramp of I-465 near I-70 shortly around 3:45  p.m. Officers found a 1999 GMC pick-up truck on its top with 77-year-old Elijah Hawkins, 62-year-old Susan Hawkins and two dogs entrapped.

Elijah was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police, and Susan was taken to Eskenazi Hospital. The dogs were uninjured.

Investigators believe Elijah, who was from the Peru area, was driving too fast around a curve when his vehicle ran off the road and overturned.

Police said both victims were wearing seat belts during the time of the crash, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident.

The ramp was closed during the investigation.
