INDIANAPOLIS - Slick, icy road conditions on area interstates and streets caused several crashes in central Indiana early Wednesday.
One of the crashes on Interstate 74 in Hendricks County claimed the lives of two people when their car slid under a parked tractor-trailer.
The second crash happened on Interstate 465 near East Street on Indianapolis' south side when a tractor-trailer lost control and collided with a minivan before crashing in a small creek.
No serious injuries were reported in that crash. The eastbound lanes of I-465 were shut down for at least two hours.
The third crash happened on Indy's northwest side on Interstate 65 at mile marker 122 when a car lost control and flipped on its side. The driver was not hurt, police said.
The fourth crash was reported near the Hendricks-Boone county line on I-65 when a tractor-trailer overturned near mile marker 128. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and the driver was not injured, police said.
Just before 4:30 a.m., a slide-off crash was reported on I-465 near the Brookville Road exit. Police advised drivers to expect delays on I-465 near mile marker 47. No injuries were immediately reported in the crash.
During rush hour just after 7 a.m., two crashes were reported on I-65 near the 38th Street exit in the northbound and southbound lanes. At least one person was injured, dispatchers said.
Nearly 30 minutes later, an SUV veered off 86th Street and crashed into a pond near Township Line Road. The driver was able to escape unharmed.
On the city's west side about 8 a.m., a car collided with a Pike Township school bus near 62nd Street and Lafayette Road. No injuries were reported, dispatchers said.
About 8:30 a.m., the 86th Street ramp to I-465 was blocked due to a tractor-trailer crash. No injuries were reported, dispatchers said.
Police advised drivers to use caution on the interstates and to allow extra time during the morning commute due to the icy conditions and road closures.
