INDIANAPOLIS -- Near-south side metal venue the 5th Quarter Lounge has been granted a reprieve from death – and a new home right in the middle of downtown.

Plans to renovate the historic Southside Turnverein building the bar occupies into insurance offices meant 5th Quarter was going to be out on the street at the end of the month.

But now, manager Shannon Wood says the bar – which has been a haven for metalheads since 2014 – will reopen as Taps Live under Taps & Dolls  at 246 S. Meridian Street.

The bar will operate in the building's basement – just like it does now – and patrons will have to enter through the rear of the building.

Although the name is changing, 5th Quarter's devotion to heavy metal will not. Opening night on May 4 will feature Minneapolis black metal band Wolvhammer and two local acts: Occult Deceiver and Crown Hill Vulture.

5th Quarter fans looking for the original experience still have until the end of the month to patronize the current location on Prospect Street south of downtown. A two-day "Farewell to the 5th" benefit show is still scheduled for April 28-29 to help the bar eventually pay for its own space and liquor license.
