WINSLOW, Ind. - A Pike County 3-year-old girl is motherless after investigators said they found her father standing near her mother’s body with a gun in one hand and a beer in the other.
Indiana State Police (ISP) said late Tuesday night at roughly 11, someone called 911 and reported a domestic disturbance with shots fired at a home at 104 S. Bluff St. in Winslow, Ind.
ISP said within minutes, officers from Winslow and Petersburg -- along with state troopers and the county sheriff’s office -- arrived at the home to find Christopher Morton, 32, in the kitchen. Officers said he was holding a handgun in one of his hands, and a beer can in the other hand.
Troopers said they had to deploy a stun gun when Morton refused to drop his weapon, but he was taken into custody with no further trouble.
Investigators found Kelsie McDonald, 24, lying unconscious in the living room with a gunshot wound. ISP said Morton was McDonald’s former boyfriend, and they had a 3-year-old child together, who was also in the home at the time of the shooting.
Medical crews quickly responded and took McDonald to Jasper Memorial Hospital, where ISP said she was pronounced dead.
Morton was arrested on preliminary felony charge of murder and booked into the Pike County Jail, where ISP said he is being held without bond.
Morton and McDonald’s daughter was unharmed and is now with other family members, police said.
Officials said an autopsy later revealed that McDonald died from multiple gunshot wounds.
