ANDERSON, Ind. -- A trooper with the Indiana State Police shot and injured a robbery suspect in Anderson Monday morning.

The shooting happened around 8:20 a.m. at the Rickers gas station at the intersection of Doctor M.L.K. Jr. Boulevard and West 53rd Street.

The ISP trooper, who was on-duty, walked into the gas station and was told by the clerk the store had just been held up by a man. The clerk pointed outside, to a man who was walking to a vehicle.

ISP says the trooper went outside and confronted the man as he was getting into his car, a 2002 Jaguar, ordering him to stop. The suspect continued to leave, and pointed a handgun out the window at the officer.

The trooper then fired his gun, hitting the suspect and the suspect's vehicle at least once.

The suspect pulled out into the street and crashed into another car. The trooper's gunshots hit the victim in both wrists.

He then surrendered and was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. The driver of the car the suspect crashed into was not injuired.

The suspect was later identified as 22-year-old Ricky Zimmerman.

The state police trooper, a veteran of the force, was uninjured.
