INDIANAPOLIS - Traffic backed up downtown near the south split after an oversize truck hit two bridges during rush hour Friday.
Indiana State Police said a southbound truck on Interstate 65 hit both the Virginia Avenue and McCarty overpasses.
Officials told RTV6 the driver had a permit to drive an oversize load, but the permit doesn't allow downtown driving.
"Oversized permits are not permitted in the downtown area because there are some low bridges here and all oversized loads are supposed to go around (Interstate) 465, but more often than not, we end up getting them down here and they hit a bridge," said Lt. Jon Smithers with the Indiana State Police.
An INDOT spokesman said the oversized truck was carrying a plywood enclosure that struck the bridges.
Smithers said bridge inspectors did not find any structural damage, only superficial damage such as paint knocked off.
The driver of the truck will be cited, his permit will be pulled and he will be forced to get another permit from the Department of Revenue, Smithers said.
A similar incident in the same area closed the interstate in February.
