HENRY COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana State Fair brings rides and food, but most of it begins with the farmers who nurture crops and tend to animals.

Dallas and Meggie Foster operate Foster Family Farms in Henry County that serves as one of Indiana’s 3,000 pork producers.

The Fosters also grow soybeans and corn – the main food for their pigs – but they said raising the animals is a year-round job.

“We raise pigs indoors,” said Dallas. “We've made that choice because it allows us to provide what we believe is the best possible care for the animals because of the changing weather in Indiana.”

The Fosters said the hogs grow fast, and it only takes a few months for them to reach several hundred pounds.

“It takes about six months from the time they are born until the time they are big enough to go to market,” said Dallas.
