HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. – Students at Cumberland Road Elementary School decided to raise money to help children in developing countries purchase bikes Wednesday.

The class of fourth graders initially planned a Bike to School event to help their peers stay physically fit, but they wanted to give back as well.

“We came up with the idea of giving bikes to kids in African nations because they can't get to school quick enough,” said student Kennedy Brown.

Once the money is raised, it will be donated to World Bicycle Relief, a program that purchases bikes for children.

"When we raise enough money I think it's going to be a really good time to give all the bikes to them,” said Brown.

Even the teachers were onboard and said they were proud of the efforts of their students.

"Just the overall enthusiasm seeing them get on board to just show kindness to some kids will never meet in realizing how much they take for granted,” said teacher David Greiwe.

So far, the students have raised $500 and hope to donate at least 10 bikes to the program.

Indianapolis police also donated bikes to the Society of St. Vincent De Paul Thursday. Officers delivered 22 bikes to the organization that went unclaimed at the police property room.
