CARMEL, Ind. -- Sun King Brewery announced on Thursday their plans to put a new distillery and tap room in downtown Carmel.

The new development is expected to open in the fall of 2017 and will feature seating for over 300, including a private event room, balcony and plaza level patio.

Sun King craft distillery and tap room will be a $5 million project. The 15,000 square feet building will be located in Midtown Carmel adjacent to the Monon Trail.

Carmel’s Mayor Jim Brainard said the city is excited about the new development, “It’s a great project, because it’s wonderful to see this investment in our midtown redevelopment area. Which is very connected with the city center with the arts and design district.”

Brainard says the next few years will be big for Carmel’s growth with many new developments in the works. The mayor's main goal is to make Carmel a pedestrian-friendly city.

“We’re working with the private sector to build a walk-able, pedestrian friendly, very traditional American city. Where people don’t have to spend hours in their car to go places that they need to go. Where they can walk and bike most places. Where kids are free and safe to run around from place to place… Much like the traditional towns we grew up in 40, 50 even 60 years ago," said Brainard.
