INDIANAPOLIS - The Super Bowl might have moved south of the Circle City this year, but it has still been a big week for one Indiana company.
The week leading up to Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest sales week of the year for canned tomato products, and Hoosier company Red Gold is the largest privately owned tomato manufacturer in the world.
"People are inside, it's cold, they're eating their comfort foods like chili, spaghetti, pizza. But during the Super Bowl, those trends even grow higher," said Red Gold's New Media Manager, Colt Reichart. "People really make a lot of food using tomatoes."
In addition to canned tomatoes, Red Gold also makes ready-to-eat salsas, sloppy joe sauce, flavored ketchups and Italian sauces, all made from tomatoes grown in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
The company has already sent extra products to grocery stores across the country, and although many of the employees wish their team was part of the big game, they're proud to know their product -- made in Indiana since 1942 -- will be.
"I guess our hand has been in the Super Bowl pot since the beginning. So it's everyday business for us, but I am glad the Super Bowl does exist because it helps with sales," Reichart said.
