KALAMAZOO, Michigan and HANCOCK COUNTY, Indiana -- The Uber driver accused of going on a killing rampage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, spent time growing up in Indiana.

Jason Dalton, who is accused of killing six people and injuring two others, went to Eastern Hancock High School for seventh, eighth and ninth grades.

Police say he opened fire on people outside an apartment complex, a car dealership and a restaurant Saturday night.

Investigators say Dalton even picked up Uber fares in between the shootings.

Uber says Dalton passed a background check, and investigators say he had no prior criminal record before the shooting.

Few people we talked to in Hancock County wanted to open up about Dalton.

Eastern Hancock High School principal David Pfaff was able to give some insight, though. He served as Dalton's football coach 30 years ago.

"It's an awful feeling," Pfaff said of finding out what happened in Kalamazoo. "It's like being kicked in the stomach, that something like this has happened."

Pfaff says the Dalton of decades ago was a gifted athlete and a respectful young man.

"Something like what happened over the weekend – if you put that on a list and said, ‘One of these things would end up happening,’ that would probably be the last thing you’d think he’d be involved in,” Pfaff said. “He was a nice boy, he was an above-average student. He came from a very good family. He was involved in school activities. He was respectful. He worked hard.

“So things like this, you can’t target and say, ‘Oh, I knew that would happen,’ because that’s not the case.”
