SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. -- A man who was shot by police early Friday morning after a chase in Shelby County has been accused of raping the female passenger in his vehicle before the police chase began.

Indiana State Police say the shooting happened shortly just after 2 a.m. at 700 N and 800 W.

The incident began when Shelby County deputies tried to pull over an SUV just south of Pleasant View near I-74 and Walnut Street.

State police say the SUV had been stolen in Indianapolis.

The SUV took off and led the deputies on a chase. The pursuit ended when another deputy put down stopped sticks.

The SUV stopped and investigators say, for some reason, the deputies opened fire.

ISP says the suspect, Jordan Smith, 26, of Indianapolis, was taken to Eskenazi Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A female who was in the SUV with Smith was not hurt.  She later told state police that she had been raped by Smith before the chase began.

None of the officers involved were injured.

The shooting, chase and reported rape are all under investigation by Indiana State Police.
