WAYNE CO., Ind -- A passenger in an Amish buggy was killed in a crash involving three cars on Thursday night in Wayne County.

The accident happened around 9:30 pm on US 35 and Newman Road.

Troopers say the buggy, driven by 21-year-old Michael Lapp of Modoc, was headed north on US 35 with no lights on.

44-year-old Martin Lawson of Hagerstown was driving behind the buggy.

Investigators say Lawson wasn't able to stop and hit the buggy, knocking it into the southbound lane of US 35.

The buggy was then sideswiped by a car driven by 51-year-old Norman Zile of Middletown.

A passenger in the buggy, 17-year-old Jonas Beiler of Economy, was thrown onto the road.

Beiler was hit by another car, driven by 17-year-old Bailey Wilkison of Mooreland.

Beiler was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the buggy and a female passenger weren't hurt. Neither were the drivers of the cars involved in the accident.

The horse was not injured in the crash.
