ROCHESTER, Ind. -- Five teenagers are facing alcohol-related charges after police pulled their vehicle over for going 110 mph.
Indiana State Police say a 2001 Dodge Caravan was heading south on U.S. 31 when was pulled over for going 110 in a 60 mph zone.
Police say as they caught up to the van, the occupants were throwing alcohol out the windows.
When they pulled the van over, they smelled an alcoholic odor, as well as noticed cases of beer and a jug of whiskey inside the van.
There were five teenagers in the van: a male driver, 17, two boys, 16, and two girls, 16 and 17. Police say all the teenagers consumed alcohol.
The driver faces charges of reckless driving, a person under 21 operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration level between .02 and .08, speeding, unlawful possession of tobacco, a learners permit violation and littering.
The two 16-year-old boys face charges for minor consumption of alcohol and unlawful possession of tobacco.
The two girls face charges of minor consumption of alcohol.
All five were released into the custody of a relative of one the teens. Police initially had trouble contacting the teen’s parents, because the parents do not use telephones due to practicing the Amish religion.
