Thieves start fire when attempting to steal transformer from warehouse

INDIANAPOLIS - After fire crews responded to a high-voltage transformer on fire Friday evening, investigators said they discovered the fire was set when someone came along and tried to steal the transformer.

Wayne Township Fire Department Captain Michael Pruitt said that at roughly 6:15 p.m. Friday, both Wayne and Decatur townships’ fire departments headed to 2515 S. Holt Road.

Crews said when they arrived they found a high-voltage transformer on the exterior of a large warehouse. The transformer was engulfed in flames.

Crews had the fire out within minutes and investigators determined someone had tried to tie a rope to the transformer in an attempt to steal the unit by dragging it away with a vehicle.

Investigators said when the thieves realized the transformer was still “energized” and active, they fled. Officials also said the vacant warehouse had signs of prior theft and vandalism.

If anyone has information on this attempted theft, call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
