Thousands of east-side Indy residents lose power during zero-degree weather

INDIANAPOLIS - Thousands of Indianapolis Power and Light customers lost power early Friday when temperatures dipped to zero degrees.

According to the IPL website about 2,400 customers on the city's east side were without power just before 7 a.m. Some RTV6 viewers on Facebook said they had been without power since 5:30 a.m.

"Power out since 5:30 a.m. Temperature is dropping rapidly in my home," one viewer wrote.

Dispatchers said a blown transformer near 38th Street and German Church Road may have caused the outage.

IPL officials said crews were working to restore power as soon as possible and by 7:45 a.m., just under 200 customers were without electricity.
