More than 700,000 Hoosiers have diabetes and another 1.6 million are at high risk.
An annual fundraiser took place Sunday -- the Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes -- and more than 3,000 folks laced up their walking shoes at Celebration Plaza in White River State Park.
Jason Sanders has a friend who has the disease.
"We're special, people who don't have diabetes. We're special because we don't have to go through the things they have to and we don't have to watch our food, and stuff like that," Sanders said.
The celebration Sunday focused on the red striders -- children and adults walking in step out who currently have diabetes.
The American Diabetes Association says one in four people who have the disease don't even know it.
RTV6 was a proud sponsor of the event and presented a check to the nonprofit for $6,000.
Organizers are hopeful the final tally will show more than $200,000 of donations from the event to be used for research.
Step Out is the American Diabetes Association's signature fundraising walk.
