LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Officials say the suspect in two Monday robberies in separate Indiana cities was arrested early Thursday morning in Alabama.
Lafayette Police Department (LPD) Lt. Brad Hayworth said at roughly 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Emily J. Karnes, 22, of Indianapolis, was taken into custody in Montgomery, Ala., on two charges of robbery while armed with a deadly weapon and one charge of theft.
LPD said officers responded Monday to a holdup alarm at Advance America, located at 405 Sagamore Parkway South. Eyewitnesses reported a female who displayed a black or gray handgun and left northbound with an undisclosed amount of cash from the business.
LPD said the suspect later entered an Advance America in Brownsburg just after 1 p.m. An employee told police the suspect discussed applying for a pay day loan. The employee thought the suspect was going to leave, but she grabbed a handgun out of her pants and pointed the gun at the employee and demanded money, police said.
Officers said she got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and left on foot in a southwest direction of travel. Police confirmed the suspect appeared to be the same suspect that committed an armed robbery of the Advance America in Lafayette earlier in the day.
Police said Karnes was identified as a result of tips received from the surveillance photo in the initial press release. You can see that photo attached to this story.
LPD said Karnes was taken into custody in Alabama without incident or local charges. She is being held there pending extradition.
