INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Department of Homeland Security has issued travel advisories and watches across Indiana.

The difference between a travel advisory and a travel watch is the degree of danger to drivers. An advisory means that anybody driving should use caution, while a watch means the conditions are "threatening top the safety of the public," according to the IDHS.

TIPS | How to drive safely in winter weather

The Indiana Department of Transportation has given tips to drivers to make sure they are taking the necessary precautions.

Those are:

  • Fully clear off your front and rear windshield, and side mirrors
  • Use low-beam lights
  • Increase following distance so you can barely see taillights
  • Turn on emergency flashers if you're stopped or traveling slower
  • Make sure your fuel tank is full and your phone is charged
  • Apply brakes firmly
