BOONE COUNTY, Ind. - Hoosier Christmas tree farmers and shipping giant FedEx are teaming up to bring holiday cheer to U.S. troops overseas as part of the "Trees for Troops" program.
Hundreds of FedEx workers, volunteers, students and tree farmers were headed to Boone County early Tuesday to begin the operation in Thorntown.
The group will gather, inspect and pack 300 trees Tuesday which will be shipped to troops in Kuwait and Afghanistan.
The Indiana National Guard pitched in on the efforts by picking up some of the donated trees.
"What's interesting is that our own 38th Sustainment Brigade from the Indiana National Guard is currently deployed to Kuwait and will help in the distribution effort in Kuwait. So, there's really the Hoosier connection there. The trees are collected here in Indiana and then they send them to Kuwait and our own Hoosiers help distribute those," Capt. Gregory Hembree said.
National Guards from across the country are working with hundreds of tree farms and they are expected to collect more than 17,000 trees.
