JACKSON COUNTY, Ind. -

A semi-tractor-trailer driver from Tennessee was killed in a crash on Interstate 65 in Jackson County, Indiana State Police said.

The 47-year-old driver was identified as Lazaro A. Melendez.

The crash happened about 2:30 a.m. Friday in the northbound lanes of I-65 near mile marker 36 when the driver lost control while crossing the icy bridge over U.S. 31, police said.

After leaving the roadway, the semi slid down an embankment and struck a concrete barrier. During the impact, the semi's trailer detached and went thought the cab, killing the driver, police said.

I-65 was shut down for nearly four hours before reopening just before 9 a.m.

U.S. 31 has since reopened.
