LEBANON, Ind. - Two Boone County teenagers were killed Sunday in and early morning car crash.
Boone County Sheriff's Deputies say Jacob Shockley, 18, of Advance, Ind., and Richard Penny Jr., 18, of Lebanon, Ind., were driving westbound on County Road 800 North when, for unknown reasons, their vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree head-on.
Residents said they heard the crash around 1 a.m. Sunday, but could not locate the car or the crash until daylight.
Medics arrived just after 8 a.m. and pronounced both boys dead at the scene.
Shockley was a senior at Western Boone Junior/Senior High School. Penny was a 2013 graduate of the same school.
Boone County Sheriff's Dept. Major Mike Nielsen said officers were working with the school to provide counseling for students who might need it.
"This is a very tragic event where we have lost two very young individuals in a horrific automobile accident," Nielsen said. "We are working closely with the Western Boone School Corporation in preparations for tomorrows classes. We will do everything that we can to ensure the students that have attended school with these young men get the appropriate counseling or help that may be needed to help them through this difficult situation."
The cause of the accident was unknown, and police said it wasn't clear whether alcohol was a factor.
