Mother and son killed, second son in critical condition after train hits SUV near Logansport

LOGANSPORT, Ind. -- A mother and her son were killed and another son was critically injured when a train hit an SUV in Cass County Friday afternoon. 

According to the Cass County Sheriff's Department, the SUV was struck by a fast-moving freight train while crossing US 24 and was pushed more than a mile before coming to a stop.

The Cass County coroner says Stefanie Carter, 42, and her son Nathaniel Gibbs, 19, were both killed in the crash. The male driver, who is also Carter's son, was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital in critical condition. 

The crash remains under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff's Department.
