INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is sending out a warning on the dangers of high water after a jet ski carrying two teens went over a dam and tossed them into the river near Broad Ripple Sunday afternoon.
Police were called to the White River shortly after 3 p.m. near the Broad Ripple Dam with reports of a drowning.
When officers arrived, they found a jet ski and learned two girls were on board, a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old. Their jet ski ran over the dam and witnesses called 911.
Both were wearing life jackets and were able to find their way back to the shore safely.
“They are very lucky they had several things going for them,” said Jon Fenning with Indiana DNR. “Water levels were starting to go down, they were dealing with a roller dam instead of a true, low-head dam and they had luck on their side. Somebody was smiling down on them today and nobody got hurt."
This is the second major water incident the DNR has seen in the last 24 hours.
Early Saturday morning, water rescue crews went searching for 27-year-old Robert Simms at Big Walnut Creek in Putnam County. Simms went missing after kayaking in the creek. His kayak was found early Sunday morning.
