COLUMBUS, Ind. -
A 13-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy were hospitalized with serious injuries early Monday after leading Columbus police on a high speed chase that ended in a rollover crash.
Just before 6:30 a.m., an Indiana State trooper attempted to stop a car for erratic driving in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 near the 66 mile marker. However, when the trooper signaled the car to stop, it took off at a high speed, police said.
The car exited I-65 at the 64 mile marker, and attempted to turn right onto State Road 58, but the car was going too fast and was unable to make the turn. The car ended up rolling down an embankment onto its top. The 13-year-old driver, reported as a runaway from Indianapolis, was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital with non- life threatening injuries.
The 17-year-old passenger, also reported as a runaway from Indianapolis, was flown by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with serious injuries.
Police believe the teens were in a 1998 Honda Accord which was reported stolen from the Indianapolis area early Monday.
The investigation is ongoing, Indiana State Police said.
