GREENWOOD, Ind. -- While one central Indiana Airman has been helping to watch out for the U.S. overseas, a group of elementary school kids has been watching out for him.

Second graders at North Grove elementary school in Greenwood have spent the past few months writing letters and sending care packages to U.S. Airman Brian Whitlow.

Whitlow, who was a student there, recently returned from his deployment in Kuwait and stopped by the school on Thursday to spend some time with his new friends.

Besides sending care packages to Whitlow, the students have spent time learning about the military and the role it serves. After a special presentation for Whitlow and his family, the students asked questions about his job and life in the Air Force.

"It's an amazing feeling honestly to have that support back home," said Whitlow, "like you know people are back home supporting you, but when you are actually recognized and everybody asks you questions it's an emotional feeling."

The class class officially 'adopted' Brian and his brother Eric who serves in the Marines last year.

The brothers have been corresponding with the students ever since.
