INDIANAPOLIS – Fire station 16 on the city’s north side may be transformed into a new restaurant.

The vacant building at 56th and Illinois streets could undergo an $800,000 renovation if the developer’s plans are approved.

Employees at the Illinois Street Food Emporium said they miss the fire station.

"Anything that would enhance the neighborhood I’m for," said Vivan Farris. “I’m not sure how parking and what would be a good fit for the neighborhood – if a bar would be such. It would be great to have a fire station back in the neighborhood.”

The Metropolitan Development Commission is set to vote on the proposal later this month.
