CLINTON COUNTY, Ind. – The Humane Society of Clinton County is crediting a business, Superior Auto, for finding a dog much in need of rescue as they repossessed a car.
The 1-year-old pit bull mix was in a crate in the back of the repossessed SUV. He was malnourished and had clearly been poorly treated.
“There was feces in the crate. There was urine standing in the crate,” Humane Society spokesman Jim Tate said. “The dog obviously had been in there for a little while. Very unsanitary and poor conditions.”
We spoke with the dog’s owner, who says the dog was well-treated and well-fed, but kept in her broken-down SUV as she went to work for 16 hours overnight last Thursday. She says crews repossessed her SUV due to late payment, and the county took the dog before a family member could come and get him.
“It’s time that people have to answer for treating dogs like this,” Tate said.
Tate has since named the dog “Repo.” Repo is recovering from scrapes and intestinal parasites.
Tate credits the crews at Superior Auto for coming across the car at just the right time.
“If it (were) left outdoors – if they had parked the vehicle back outside and no one had said anything, it’s possible the dog could have passed away,” Tate said.
The Humane Society is planning to send a letter to the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office next week in hopes animal neglect charges will be filed.
Once healthy, Repo will be put up for adoption. We’re told one employee at Superior Auto is already interested.
