RICHMOND, Ind. – A new tactic aims to evict tenants out of their homes if they’re caught selling or using drugs.
Richmond police have started using an ordinance that calls for civil remedies for drug sales or drug usage going on inside homes. This could allow landlords to evict tenants.
“If they (police) keep going to the same place over and over again, because of overdoses or they were called in because they know there is drug activity…I think they need to be kicked out and move someplace else. That’s the only way you’re going to get the drug activity broke up,” said neighbor Henry Page.
Some neighbors believe eviction for drug users and dealers could be a bad idea.
“It’s not going to help these people with their problems,” said Brian Drook. “It’s just going to get them out onto the street and more dangerous. They need a program to actually help them kick the habit.”
Another neighbor said he doesn't understand the tactic.
"I'm actually in a treatment program right now getting help for my disease. So I don't understand how I can get evicted for a health problem," said Eric Commons.
Police provide training for landlords to better screen their tenants and they have charted areas that have the most overdose calls.
