West Lafayette police investigating sexual assault near Purdue campus

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The West Lafayette Police Department is investigating a report of a sexual assault near Purdue University's campus early Thursday morning.

Campus emergency status on the university's web site says the assault was reported east of the 700 block of Northwestern avenue in the early morning hours. 

Anyone with information is asked to call the Purdue Police Department at 765-494-8221. The WeTip anonymous hotline, which is used by all Greater Lafayette law enforcement agencies, also is available at 1-800-78CRIME (1-800-782-7463).

 
Safety tips from Purdue University:
 
Crime prevention and awareness, as well as consistent reporting, may be the strongest defenses against becoming the victim.
  • Trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe, get to a safe place and call for help.
  • Walk with confidence and stay alert. Show that you're aware and in control. Body language works to your advantage.
  • Don't be distracted with loud headphones.
  • Consider using the SAFE walk program for a walking escort
  • Be mindful of the locations of the blue light Emergency Telephones (ETS) and use them if you feel threatened.
  • If you feel uneasy about a situation, trust your instincts and attempt to interrupt the chain of events. Create a distraction and involve others.
  • Avoid secluded places where you could vulnerable.
  • Use the buddy system and watch out for each other.

Report any suspicious activity or person immediately to the Purdue University Police Department at 9-1-1.
