INDIANAPOLIS - An 83-year-old woman died after being hit by a car Tuesday night, police said.
The woman was struck near the intersection of Post Road and Washington Street on the city's east side.
Police said she was taken to Methodist Hospital in critical condition and that she was conscious when she was taken from the scene, but she later died at the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the woman remained on the scene and cooperated with police, officials said.
Police said a blue Chevrolet van, driven by 54-year-old Jacqueline Shepherd of Martinsville, was traveling westbound on Washington Street and struck the woman.
Officers who are familiar with the victim believe that she suffers from a possible medical condition that could cause her to wander into the street, police said.
Police don't think drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident, but they did a blood test of the driver as part of standard procedure.
Officials said they are withholding the name of the victim until her next of kin can be notified.
