Mom files federal lawsuit against Howard Co. DCS caseworker

Suit accuses caseworker of making false statements

INDIANAPOLIS - A Howard County woman has filed a lawsuit against the Howard County Department of Child Services on allegations that a caseworker conspired with her ex-husband for the custody of their children.

Cara Pettit claims that DCS caseworker Annette Nearon and her ex-husband Cary Holt made false allegations of child abuse against her so that Holt would gain custody of their children. The complaint also claims that Nearon and Holt have a "personal relationship."

According to court documents, Pettit also claims that Nearon tried to cover up the allegations and worked with Holt to manipulate the DCS system. Nearon is also accused of verbally abusing Pettit in front of her children.

Pettit's attorney, Mark King said that "Pettit has suffered emotionally and physically from the actions of DCS."

Howard County DCS did not immediately issue a response to the lawsuit.
