INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis woman who called police to stop her husband from attacking her now wants to know why the encounter ended in his death.

Heather Hicks called 911 around 9 p.m. reporting that her husband Kevin Hicks was beating her.

Officers arrived to the Marathon gas station at 10th and Rural streets to see Kevin Hicks attacking his wife. A physical altercation between an officer and Hicks then ensued.

IMPD says the officer attempted to deploy his Taser on Hicks, but it was knocked from his hand.

The fight then continued, with both Hicks and the officer falling to the ground. Witnesses reportedly told police it appeared Hicks may have attempted to grab the officer's gun.

At some point during the fight, the officer fired a single shot – striking and killing Hicks.

The officer suffered a possible broken hand and possible concussion, as well as a bite wound to the hand.

Heather Hicks and her young son witnessed the fight from their car. Even though she called police for help, now she says she wants answers.

"The only thing we need to focus on – it is not what Kevin and I went through in the past – is what happened last night," Heather Hicks said. "And what happened last night is … they need to focus on why that officer killed my husband."

IMPD has promised transparency in the ongoing investigation. The officer who shot Hicks was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of that investigation.
