CARMEL, Ind. - Crews plan on beginning work this week on U.S. Highway 31 upgrades in Carmel. It’s a $141 million contract that includes improvements at Interstate 465 and several new roundabouts slated to open by the end of 2015.
Over the course of the next two years, INDOT said it plans to install roundabout interchanges along U.S. 31 at 106th, 116th, 131st and 136th streets. Plenty of Hamilton County commuters will recall the massive construction project launched a few years ago when Carmel built roundabouts at several major intersections along Keystone Avenue.
INDOT said beginning Monday, the intersection of 136th Street and Eglin Drive will be closed for roughly two months.
Restrictions on I-465 begin at 9 p.m. Thursday. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) said contractors will close the left lane of the eastbound I-465 exit ramp to U.S. 31/Meridian Street (Exit 31) to place temporary pavement. INDOT said the ramp lane will stay closed at the top of the ramp so that contractors can start on a new flyover bridge, but all turn lanes will remain open approaching the base of the ramp.
Then, at the same time Friday night, INDOT said the right lane of eastbound I-465 will be restricted near Exit 31 as crews place temporary barriers along the shoulder. This restriction is expected to end by 6 a.m. Saturday.
