Man Found Dead After South Side House Fire

Home Did Not Have Working Smoke Detectors, Officials Say

One person died in a house fire on the city's south side late Thursday, officials said.

Indianapolis Fire Department crews responded to the blaze in the 900 block of East Southport Road just after 11 p.m.

Crews were met with heavy smoke and flames.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

Fire crews traced the fire to one room in the home, where they found a man's body.

The victim's name was not released early Friday.

Damage to the home is estimated at $175,000.

The home did not have working smoke detectors, fire officials said.
