The Martinsville Common Council voted Monday night to annex about 8 square miles of Washington Township, doubling the city's size.

The council voted 4-3 to approve the annexation, which had been hotly contested.

Opponents of the annexation are concerned about the property tax increase the annexation will cost them.

Others say the annexation is important to Martinsville's future. Some critics of the measure are also concerned the city engineer will profit from the project, because he owns a private civil engineering company that's involved with the annexation.
