The boyfriend of the mother of a 6-year-old boy who was fatally shot by his 11-year-old brother was sentenced Monday to home detention.

Matthew Boulden was charged last June with three counts of neglect after the then-11-year-old shot and killed his brother, Andrew Frye, in their home near Martinsville.

Boulden pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of neglect of a dependent and was sentenced to 180 days on home detention.

Police said Boulden and the boys' mother, Amanda Vandagrifft, 28, left the gun where the children had access to it and that they should have known better than to leave the older boy home alone with other children after several violent outbursts.

The 11-year-old was acquitted of murder but convicted of a lesser juvenile charge of reckless homicide.

Vandagrifft faces charges of neglect of a dependent, causing death and three additional counts of neglect of a dependent. Her trial is set for Sept. 24.
