A senior manager for Muncie's bus service was arrested on suspicion he was one of two drivers who struck a woman and didn't stay to wait for police early Sunday, authorities said.Police said they believe Kevin Barton was the second driver to strike Jamie Beaty, 23, on West Kilgore in Muncie. Beaty, a mother of two, died as a result of being hit, but police said they don't know which strike killed her. Authorities said Beaty and a friend were walking home from a party when Beatty accidentally stepped into traffic and was hit by a car. The car did not stop, police said.A pickup was the second vehicle to strike her, police said. Two witnesses told police that the pickup's driver stopped and saw that he had hit someone, but he then drove away. The witnesses recorded the pickup's license plate number and gave it to police, who tracked the number to Barton, 6News' Jeremy Brilliant reported."I'm confident that he was at the scene. Both witnesses (were) able to ID the truck," Muncie police Sgt. Bradley Arey said.Police said Barton was off-duty when he struck Beaty. Police said he failed a field sobriety test when they found him.
Barton faces a felony charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. If he is convicted, he would lose his job, Brilliant reported.Police said they believe the car that hit Beaty was a 2004, 2005 or 2006 silver Nissan Maxima. They said they believe it has some undercarriage damage.Anna Waymire, Beaty's aunt, said she hoped the car's driver would surrender to police."If you've seen anything, if you've heard people talk, just turn it in for Jamie and Jamie's kids," Waymire said.
