NEWTOWN, Conn. - A group in Newtown, Conn., is launching an initiative in response to last month's school shootings to prevent similar tragedies.

Sandy Hook Promise, formerly known as Newtown United, announced its plans Monday.

The group says it invited victims' families to the event. Co-founder Tim Makris has said that the group does not represent or speak for the families.

Makris says he's not sure how many families might participate.

A gunman shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14 and killed 20 first-graders and six women before committing suicide as police arrived. He also killed his mother before driving to the school and carrying out the massacre.
