An off-duty Indiana State Police trooper was credited with saving the life of an elderly woman who was choking at a restaurant on New Year's Day.Master Trooper Dan Hearon was eating dinner with his wife at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Plainfield about 7:30 p.m. when Betty Bayse, 90, started choking at a table beside him, ISP said.Hearon said he quickly realized that Bayse was unable to breathe and he performed the Heimlich maneuver on her, which dislodged the food Bayse was choking on."Witnessed indicated that Hearon attempted to buy Ms. Bayse and her family their meals once everything got back to normal," Sgt. Curt Durnil said. "Ms. Bayse and her family have since contacted Indiana State Police with their sincere thanks for Hearon's professionalism and calm demeanor."Hearon has been with ISP for 16 years. He works out of the Bloomington post and mostly patrols in Morgan County.
