A man from Wisconsin was arrested Monday at the Indiana Fieldhouse complex in Fishers after he punched a girl who was playing basketball for him, police said.

Fishers police were called to the complex at 11824 Technology Drive about 1:30 p.m.

The 17-year-old victim said that her basketball coach, Fred Freeman, 47, of Hartford, Wisc., was verbally abusing her after their team lost a game.

"She reported that during a verbal altercation, he punched her in the face, threw her to the ground and got on top of her with his hands around her throat," said Fishers police spokesman Tom Weger.

The victim suffered scratches and abrasions on her arms and legs in the scuffle, police said.

The parent of another player corroborated the girl's statement, saying she saw Freeman punch the girl.

"Officers located the suspect at a local restaurant. He admitted to restraining the girl and claimed he was the victim," police said.

Freeman was arrested on a misdemeanor battery charge and was taken to the Hamilton County Jail.
