A cache of guns, knives and drugs was found in the car of a man killed by police after shooting a Fortville officer, police said.
James Lockhart III ambushed Officer Matt Fox when he tried to stop him for a broken taillight in Lawrence late Friday and fired several shots, hitting the officer in the head and the wrist, police said.
Fox was able to radio for help, and Lockhart was killed in a shootout with responding officers.
When police searched Lockhart's car, they found six guns, ammunition, four machetes, another large knife and a pound of marijuana packaged to be sold, police said.
The guns included an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun, a SKS semi-automatic rifle, a semi-automatic .44-caliber Magnum, a .22-caliber pistol and the 45-caliber semi-automatic handgun believed to have been used to shoot Fox.
Lockhart did not have a valid gun permit, police said.
Police said Lockhart was previously arrested in 2004 on suspicion of battery, resisting law enforcement and possession of marijuana.
Fox was released from the hospital Wednesday.
