A man was killed and a child was shot when a man opened fire on a busy intersection Monday night, police said.The shooting happened in a parking lot of a strip mall near 38th Street and Sherman Avenue just after 7 p.m.Jeffrey Taylor, 24, who was standing in the parking lot, was shot in the back, said IMPD Sgt. Paul Thompson. He died later at Wishard Memorial Hospital. It was unclear if Taylor was the target of the shooting, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.Police said a 10-year-old girl was also shot when the car she was riding in was hit by the gunfire. A bullet went through the back passenger door and hit the girl in the abdomen.She was transported to Riley Hospital For Children with injuries that were not life threatening, Thompson said.An IndyGo bus was also riddled with bullets, police said. Five people were on that bus at the time, but no one was hurt.

Multiple shell casings were found in the parking lot, but the shooter got away, police said. He was described as a middle-aged black male with a stocky build and wearing all-black clothing.The shooting marks the city's 13th confirmed homicide in two weeks.Indianapolis Metro Police Chief Michael Spears was at the scene Monday night."We're going to keep working hard and fighting hard on every shift, in every district in this city so this activity can't take root," he said.
