Police: Man Killed When Gun Fires During Tug-Of-War

Officers Seek Man After Shooting

A man was killed in an apparent struggle over a handgun at a Miami County home late Friday night, police said.

Indiana State Police troopers were called to a home in the 2600 block of West County Road 1050 South just before 10 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found Robert Ray Vandergriff Jr., 18, of Kokomo, suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. Vandergriff was taken to a hospital, where he died.

ISP Detective Mike Tarrh said Vandergriff, Daniel Huckleby, 25, and a 39-year-old woman whose name wasn't released were doing drugs in the home before the shooting.

Police said Huckleby and Vandergriff began playing tug-of-war with the handgun when it fired, striking Vandergriff.

Detectives want to question Huckleby, who left the scene before officers arrived, police said.

Police asked anyone with information to call 800-382-0689.
