Police: Man Waited For Officers After Fatal Stabbing

Man Arrested After Victim Slain At Indianapolis Apartment

A man stood by a pickup truck with a bloody butcher knife beside him to wait for officers to arrive after he called 911 to report fatally stabbing his friend, police said.

Indianapolis police were called to the Woods apartments in the 8200 block of Heatherton Court, near Interstate 69 and 82nd Street, at about 5:50 a.m. Tuesday.

"The suspect in this case is the one who called 911 and stated that he had killed his friend," said Sgt. Matt Mount. "He then stood by here waiting for police to arrive."

Mount said Jose Luis Tinajero-Garcia, 32, waited next to his pickup truck and pointed out the knife lying beside him to officers when they arrived.

"He cooperated. He took police up to where the incident occurred," Mount said.

The victim, Fabian Gutierrez-Barcenas, 23, suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the stabbing resulted from an argument that escalated into a fight.

Tinajero speaks little English, Mount said, and he had an identification card that identified him as a citizen of Mexico. They weren't immediately sure how he knew Gutierrez-Barcenas.

Neighbors were shocked to hear about what happened in an area that hasn't had much crime.

"My mother, I just woke up, and she said, 'They found somebody dead,' and I was like, 'What? I can't believe that because this is a good neighborhood,'" said resident Jeremy Wilson.
