INDIANAPOLIS -- Students at Butler University will have the chance to study ‘strategies of resistance’ to President Donald Trump in a class being offered this fall.
The “Special Topics” class titled “Trumpism & U.S. Democracy” will be led by Butler University College of Communications professor Ann M. Savage.
The course description charges Trump with “perpetuating sexism, white supremacy, xenophobia, nationalism, nativism, and imperialism.”
The course will run from August 23 through December 17 and is open to 17 students.
The university acknowledged reactions to the course with a post on their Twitter page Thursday afternoon saying that the course is “a one-time, Special Topics course, not required of students in any academic program.”
Butler said the faculty member who is teaching the course had provided an updated description that clarifies students are not required to participate in activism as part of the course.
“Like all universities, Butler University values academic freedom and the liberties this affords its faculty members. At the same time, Butler strives to be a hospitable forum for the civil exchange of ideas.”
