CARMEL, Ind. -- The Carmel City Council is considering an ordinance that would require people to use their turn signals when using a roundabout.
The proposal, introduced at Monday’s city council meeting, suggests a $100 fine to anyone caught not using their turn signal. State law does not require motorists to signal in roundabouts.
City Councilman Jeff Worrell said he supports the idea of the proposal, but not the fine.
“Requiring or using turn signals to make [roundabouts faster] is the goal,” said Worrell. “My concern is what does that look like? How does that work? And should there be a fine? Right now, I’m against that.”
Carmel currently has over 100 roundabouts – more than any city in the country.

New rules for navigating roundabouts in Indiana are also under consideration by the Senate. If passed, the law would allow semis as much freedom as they need to negotiate their turns in a roundabout. It would also require all vehicles to yield to any semi or large truck, regardless of which lane the smaller vehicle was in.
That law is still awaiting a vote by the Senate.
