INDIANAPOLIS – An Indiana lawmaker has plans to introduce proposals to combat drug usage in communities across the state.

Sen. Jim Merritt said his proposal, introduced next session, will increase penalties for drug dealers.

He wants to create a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison for dealers who sell drugs laced with fentanyl, and for those that are responsible for the deals that result in death.

"We can talk to and say to the criminal do not use a gun. We want our citizens safe, we want our law enforcement safe, we want to save lives,” said Merritt.
