INDIANAPOLIS -- If the Indianapolis City-County Council passes a new ordinance Monday night, it would change what happens if your pet runs away.

If the ordinance passes, the number of days you have to claim your lost pet from somebody who finds it would drop from 30 to 14.

The ordinance, Proposal No. 14, 2017, is under consideration for Monday's City-County Council meeting.

Under the current law, if you lose your pet, you have 30 days to claim it through Indianapolis Animal Care Services if somebody else finds it. After those 30 days, it can become the finder's pet.

It was proposed by Councilor Zach Adamson.
